It’s the Really, Really Little Things

I realize it does nothing to dispel my dorkiness, but after a few months’ worth of highly elevated parts per million of stress and insanity, it did my heart tremendous amounts of good this morning to sit down to an unrushed breakfast and a crossword puzzle containing the following clue: “Chomsky who wrote ‘Syntactic Structures.'” I’m not sure whether the New York Times intended this hint to be more of a challenge than others, but the fact that Noam Chomsky is considered mainstream enough that both his name and his linguistic work could help someone fill in the blanks contained in a leisure-time activity provides a bit of micro-assurance that all is not lost. Or on an even more minor scale, that all that doctoral work did, in fact, enable me to solve a tangible problem. Take that, humanities naysayers.
